Boy of Summer (note the severe lack of plurality)
Still working on getting a digicam so I can better ornament my thoughts...
This summer has been pretty amazing, I don't think I've ever been busier. First off, I am back working in the Pharmacy at Stanton Hospital, with some dabbling in lab out patients, but basically every department is understaffed so I get pulled in all sorts of directions. Secondly, my volunteer commitments include organizing rosters and schedules, as well as reffing, as an Exec member for Yellowknife outdoor soccer (our team is currently 2-1-1). I also coached William Mac track and field before their archaic high jump equipment collapsed and severed a kid's femoral artery (not quite, but that crap was a WHMIS nightmare - uber dangerous). Most gigundormously, I am again Security Captain for Folk on the Rocks, which starts today and perpetuates itself thoughout the weekend. Hello 14 hour days in the heat (25-32 degrees here), bugs, and sun. I will be one blond lobster come Monday.
Most of my time has been taken up by preparing med school applications, ensuring I am registered for all necessary prerequisites (trying to find an appropriate physics course between three different med schools is nigh impossible) for medicine on top of taking senior Economics courses to finish my undergrad degree from UofA (BSc Biology w/ minor in Economics...yeah I'm weird, but then... you knew that). This is all over and above my Pharmacy classes, SUPPOSEDLY what my main focus is (but shall be dropped like so many hot potatoes once I'm bound for med school) - the result being that I am taking 35 credits worth of classes next year. Oh happy day! I can and will deal with that, but the interim, the lovely girl I was supposed to be living with next year has suddenly and w/o warning decided she's living with someone else, so I am hooped for housing. Extremely inconsiderate, especially considering I am 1500 km away from Saskatoon, while she is in Regina, and I now have to worry about apt. hunting when I should be writing practice MCATs in preparation for the real deal come Sept. 7th in Edmonton. I need to join Facebook so I can see if there are any other pharmacy classmates that still need a roomie.
My main regret so far has been a serious neglect of the gym, when summer is usually the pinnacle of my fitness regime thanks to a regular job that normally puts me on a good schedule to get such things done. However, with the aforementioned extracurriculars and soccer, loads of tennis, frisbee, rugby and beach volleyball, I barely have time to get in a proper supper. Beach volleyball has been superb, mostly thanks to Becca Kroeger, who's organized the whole sh-bang, with men's/women's/coed nights and drop in. Graham King and I won the Aboriginal Day tournament, but the second tourney was Canada Day when I went home to play in a tennis meet there (which I unexpectedly won, with the $100 prize being even more unexpected). Unfortunately, the 3rd tourney is next weekend, the same time as the Yk Open tennis tourney. I would have picked Beach territorials over tennis, but Graham's ankle is off from soccer (from his 0-1 loss to our team Monday night) and he's got plans with his g/f. Bah! Anyone reading this going to be in Alberta in August and want to take on Beach provincials with me?? HUAH! I can afford it as my rugby trip to Calgary (the source of some very fond memories and kick ass times) was ruined this year as I shattered my big toenail stubbing it against the beach vball pole - sheared off a chunk of the toe as well. Canadian North was willing to give me a refund so I reneged on the trip - hoping to find a reason to hit Edm or Cgy for a beach tourney yet though.
Not enough BBQing has been done!! Reason for it is that I've been so incredibly transient; after renting the first month I've housesat for 4 different people now. I'll be with Rick and Heather Leslie for a month at least, so this'll be the most stability I've had in awhile. It's suddenly sweltering though (32 in Fort Smith, about the same or higher in Cgy and Edm).
All the more reason I'm pigging out on butter pecan soft ice cream! mmmmm drippy and nutty!
Stay in touch everyone!
