Who knows what will happen next.... the SHADOW knows! MUAHahahahaha!

So today I got the awesome opportunity to shadow two physicians, Dr. Ernie Fuller, a general surgeon with whom I play tennis, and Dr. Shawn Mattas, a good friend of mine who does acapella with me and his partner Shad. The morning was filled with outpatient procedures in medical daycare, gastro and colonoscopies. I got up close and personal with many a hyperplastic, tubular and villous polyp, the latter two being the worst kind, indicators of cancerous growth. The versatility of the lacroscope is pretty amazing, they can funnel forceps, snares, cauterizing tips through that thing as it winds its way through the transverse colon. The staff in MDC are also really warm and engaging people. Dr. Fuller bakes for them every time he's on scopes, how endearing is that?

I'm currently on call with Shawn for his obstetrics shift, he's called twice so far, but nothing requiring a hospital visit yet, mostly UTI's and preterm labour. There's a high likelihood I'm getting woken up at 4am to witness the miracle of creation. Shades of 26 hour residency shifts ahead...

This weekend I'm housesitting for Teresa Brooks, one of my lovely lab compatriots in chemistry and hematology. I'll be able to get loads of studying done for MCATs over the long weekend and hopefully still have time for some tennis and volleyball, as well as our team's final round robin soccer game. The last one was brutal, we were ahead 2-0 at half courtesy of a beautiful header goal by yours truly off a corner kick. However, there's a huge mud puddle in front of the net, and when I went in goal for the 2nd half I got covered and mud and it made for some very slippery goals that should have been saves. In the last five minutes I badly misjudged my position on an opposing throw in and ended up scoring a humiliating own goal. Props to my team for trying to cheer me up but I'll admit when I blew it! Another 3-3 tie against a team we should have clobbered. I did manage to hold off a very aggressive and talented player today to keep atop the tennis ladder. The last tourney of the season is Aug. 16-19.

Anyways, I better get some sleep in anticipation of being woken up. This week's feature shout up (not a regular feature, but these things have to start somewhere) is to the lovely and talented girls from the UC Berkeley Overtones for their incredibly catchy and technically masterful youtube rendition of Frou Frou's 'Let Go'. Similar props to the UNC Achordants for the best version of Imogen Heap's 'Hide and Seek'. See my facebook page for links!

Cheers all! Stew
